Having been shamed by Bob’s belated “Proper Introduction” I thought I should rectify the Sin I committed by posting to threads without introducing myself here.
Mea Culpa!
Anyway, Hi. Greetings. Hello. I’m known off the air as Steve and on air as “Cherokee” or “163CT105” depending on Band, Frequency and Company.
I’m a recent returnee to Radio having started out on CB in the mid 70s and pretty much given-up in the mid 80s when all channels appeared to be filled with identical kids, equipped with Birthday/Christmas present radios, all asking each other “wotz yer 20” and “’ow many candles you burnin’”. Every now and again I’d make attempts to rekindle some of the joys of the pre-legal days but usually found the channels deserted, and hopes that the newly legalised Euro 40 in 1997 might liven things up a bit were soon shattered.
Whilst clearing out the garage in February this year I found an old Midland 77/095, an Audioline 340 (both circa about 82) and a '97 Maycom EM27 (the two old ones worked but the Maycom was a doorstop). That prompted another visit to CB-land where I found the channels were now NOT deserted, but instead inhabited by a strange race of sub-humans called “Muppets” with limited intelligence and speaking a language similar to English but regularly punctuated with profanities. To avoid these strange creatures and their pagan Gods of “the telly”, “the footie”, “the pub” I bought an old Major M360 and the seeds of sideband were sown.
The Major was fairly rapidly replaced by a Ranger 2970 and that, in turn, ceded its place to an ancient but hardy old Kenwood TS430. There are a few FM homebases knocking around too for local conversations on UK and EU FM, and a hand-held for the car – supported by two base aerials of a type I daren’t mention for fear of the apparent “wrath of George”.
So that’s me. Hi folks.
