Hello good buddies,
For some strange darn reason my brain has beneo n the overdrive with memories of my old CB days prior to being all becoming legal in the early eighties. Just a mere teenager then, it was really exciting looking out for the bears and chatting fun with loads of people. I then last used it briefly about 1993, and whilst there were a few nice people, there were also a lot of idiots and plenty of keyloggers which really annoyed me. Before I signed out, my last piece of angry deviance was when I put my mike on with a band round it, loudly played a classical album, went to fetch a pint of milk and switched the whole thing off when I came back. Never switched on since and gave the whole kit away.
I don't have a cb set up now, I used to have a Harrier CBX which I loved and I think a silver fox arial. I am thinking of getting something, but find it difficult to decide if I do want a CB and get back into it., life has moved on but I remember the good old days of chatting to people. The only barrier is that I would not be impressed if the idiots are still around clogging the airwaves. I work from home so maybe havign it switched on, listening in ect.. i don't know. I must admit, I've enjoyed listening to the website at WEB LINK but plenty of time it's been 'dead'
Back then in the early 80's my uncle had an AM radio and he boasted of reaching someone in Italy/France and had a good long discusison early hours i nthe morning?
I'm very much sold on the idea how peopel in Nebraska have to have CB's in case their mobile telecoms are knocked out due to their weather patterns, and I do worry somewhere at the back of my mind as to where the UK will be in a communicaiton crisis. Perhaps the CB will come again into it's own. The CB to me would be a bit of company whilst browsing the net and having a chat.
I struggle to work out how I'd fit a mobile in my new Yaris car, I'm not prepared to 'screw holes' here and there, wonder if I can get a CB that will plug into the cigarette power thing. i imagine I couldn't get an old Harrier CBX in there, but have seen the new handheld maycom AH27, but then I also like the new Cobra 19 DX IV EU - it's got AM and FM. I know AM is not legal, but would be nice to listen in. If I do come back I'd want to get more out of it than listening to the idiots on 19. I do like a lot of the old classic CB's with the SWR meter and all the buttons so you can fine tune.
Living on the edge of Sheffield, it's a 30 minute drive to the Summit of Snake Pass in Derbyshire, so I would not only reach back into Sheffield, but also across to Manchester and I'd be right under the busy flightpath.
I think the arial I might go for is a magnetic one for the top of my roof, is something I can stick in my window as I live in a bottom floor flat. So, something thjat can be stuck in a biscuit tin (lol) or strong enough to go on the top of my car.
Being a green party member, I'm also deeply worried abotu how our world is ending up, with oil prices goign as they are, I do beleive our society is heading for some major changes, and perhaps having a CB won't be a bad thing at all, now, I'm not talking apolocalypse here and do run the risk of sounding a nutcase... but.... lol
So, is it really worth havign a go at getting back into CB, and what kind of set up do you think I'd enjoy best. What's this SSB thing etc.
Many thanks, roger and out!
